Step-by-Step Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and form into meatballs.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with cooking oil. Brown the meatballs on all sides for about 8-10 minutes, then transfer to a plate.
- In the same skillet, lower the heat and add the sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally for 15-20 minutes until caramelized. Optionally add sugar.
- Deglaze the skillet with white wine, scraping up browned bits. Simmer for 2 minutes and then add beef broth. Simmer uncovered for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and let simmer on low for 10-15 minutes.
- Remove the lid, sprinkle grated Gruyère cheese over the meatballs and broil for 3-5 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
- Serve the meatballs with sauce, paired with crusty bread or pasta.

Notes
Takes time for onions to caramelize; patience is key for the best flavor.
