  • 1 large Egg Acts as a binding agent.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Fresh cloves add aromatic flavor.
For the Sauce
  • 2 medium Onions Medium-sized yellow onions work best.
  • 2 cups Beef Broth Substitute with chicken broth or vegetable broth for a milder taste.
  • 1/2 cup White Wine Optional, or use extra beef broth instead.
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar Optional for enhancing the sweetness.
For the Topping
  • 1 cup Gruyère Cheese Can be substituted with Swiss, Fontina, or mozzarella.

Equipment

  • large mixing bowl
  • Skillet
  • spatula

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and form into meatballs.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with cooking oil. Brown the meatballs on all sides for about 8-10 minutes, then transfer to a plate.
  3. In the same skillet, lower the heat and add the sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally for 15-20 minutes until caramelized. Optionally add sugar.
  4. Deglaze the skillet with white wine, scraping up browned bits. Simmer for 2 minutes and then add beef broth. Simmer uncovered for 5-7 minutes until thickened.
  5. Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and let simmer on low for 10-15 minutes.
  6. Remove the lid, sprinkle grated Gruyère cheese over the meatballs and broil for 3-5 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  7. Serve the meatballs with sauce, paired with crusty bread or pasta.
