Ingredients

For the Meat Layer
  • 1 lb ground beef Provides the hearty protein base; substitute with ground turkey for a lighter option.
  • 1 cup turkey bacon Offers a smoky flavor; feel free to use regular bacon for more richness.
For the Topping
  • 1 bag frozen potato tots Delivers a crispy topping without the hassle of making fresh potatoes.
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Adds a melty, sharp flavor; consider using mozzarella for a milder taste.
For the Creamy Mixture
  • 1 cup sour cream Contributes tangy creaminess; Greek yogurt is a healthy substitute.
  • 1/2 cup green onions Freshens the dish with a mild onion kick.
For Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Intensifies the savory quality; fresh garlic provides a stronger flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder Adds savory depth.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Introduces a gentle heat.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances all flavors; you can use less if you’re watching sodium intake.

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • medium bowl
  • 9x13-inch baking dish

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large skillet, heat over medium-high heat. Add 1 pound of ground beef, breaking it apart with a spatula, and cook until it's browned and crumbled, about 6-8 minutes.
  2. Return the drained beef to the skillet and stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to coat the beef evenly in the seasonings, and sauté for an additional minute.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine sour cream and chopped green onions. Add in half of the shredded cheddar cheese and mix until well combined.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9x13-inch baking dish, layer the seasoned beef mixture at the bottom and smooth the creamy mixture over the beef layer.
  5. Spread the frozen potato tots in a single layer over the creamy layer, then sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  6. Carefully place the casserole in the preheated oven. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the tots are golden and crispy and the cheese is bubbling.
  7. Once out of the oven, let your casserole sit for about 5 minutes to allow it to set slightly before serving.
