- Combine the tomato sauce, dried onion, garlic powder, chili powder, black pepper, cumin, and hot sauce in a large pot over medium heat. Stir gently for about 2 minutes.
- Add raw hamburger to the pot. Use a potato masher to break down the meat as it cooks, stirring occasionally for about 5-7 minutes.
- Reduce heat to low and cover the pot partially. Simmer for 2-3 hours, stirring every 20-30 minutes until thickened and deepened in color.
- For slow cooker method, transfer sauce mixture to slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours, propping the lid slightly open.
- Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as desired. Simmer for another 10 minutes after adjustments.
- Serve the sauce generously over steamed hot dogs in soft New England rolls, topped with onions and mustard.
