Ingredients
  

Gravy Base
  • 2 tablespoons Reduced-Sodium Soy Sauce Swap with tamari for gluten-free
  • 1 block Firm or Extra-Firm Tofu Avoid silken tofu
  • ¼ cup All-Purpose Flour Use gluten-free flour blend as an alternative
  • 1 cup Soy Milk Almond or oat milk can be used as substitutes
  • 2 tablespoons Vegan Butter Any vegan margarine can serve this purpose
Seasoning Mixture
  • ¼ cup Nutritional Yeast Omit for a simpler taste
  • 1 tablespoon Garlic Powder Fresh garlic can be used
  • 1 tablespoon Smoked Paprika Use regular paprika for a milder taste
  • 1 teaspoon Chili Powder Cayenne can heighten the heat
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano Consider fresh oregano for a brighter flavor
  • to taste Salt and Pepper Adjust according to dietary needs
Gravy Sauce
  • 1 to 1½ cups Water Adjust amount based on desired thickness
  • 2 tablespoons Oil Use any cooking oil on hand

Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. In a bowl, whisk together reduced-sodium soy sauce, water, nutritional yeast, smoked paprika, dried oregano, garlic powder, and chili powder. Set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Crumble tofu into the pan and cook for 10 to 15 minutes until golden-brown.
  3. Pour the seasoning mixture into the pan with the tofu, stirring well. Cook for an additional 8 to 10 minutes.
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low and sprinkle all-purpose flour over the mixture. Stir thoroughly for about 5 minutes.
  5. Gradually whisk in water and soy milk, stirring constantly for 5 to 7 minutes as the gravy thickens.
  6. Stir in vegan butter until melted. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
