Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, mix sourdough starter, sugar, flour, milk, and melted butter. Cover and let ferment overnight for 8-12 hours.
  2. The next morning, heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Monitor with a thermometer.
  3. Once the sponge has fermented, mix in egg, diced apples, salt, baking soda, and spices until sticky and cohesive.
  4. Drop about 1/4 cup of batter into hot oil. Fry for about 2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  5. Remove fritters with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  6. For glaze, whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until silky. Drizzle over warm fritters before serving.
